Video projection on wall, sound, patched and sanded wall, floor paint on debris, 02:44:42
In galleries, the walls are routinely drilled with many holes, patched and newly painted to support continued use. I am inspired by how these spaces are continuously reshaped and redefined. This project explores the temporality of this institutional building through acts of vandalization and labor. First, I intentionally created a 9-foot-tall crack on the gallery wall. I then sanded a wooden handrail from my home, collecting the dust to fill the crack. Using the same handrail, I applied patching plaster over the filled area, then sanded the surface flat to painted it white. The debris on the floor was coated with floor paint. For my final iteration, I projected the image of the crack onto the neighboring wall to juxtapose the its former presence with the repairing surface. Throughout the installation, sound recordings captured during each phase of the process played in the space. At last, I cleaned up—patched and painted—everything back to its original form.
